Following your operation a splint will be applied and packs
inserted in your nostrils to stop the bleeding.
You will spend a night in the hospital and will be allowed
home the next morning after being reviewed.
You will be seen two weeks later for removal of the splint. A
further review will be carried out 2 - 3 months later. An
earlier review may me scheduled if needed. |
What will I feel and look like:
Surgery is not usually painful but some discomfort is to be
expected. It is best to recover at home for a week and return
to work should be contemplated after removal of splint in two
weeks. Small amount of bleeding and crusting in the first ten
days is to be expected as is the bruising around the eyes. and
feeling of blocked nostrils. Skin of the nose will feel numb
for a few months but the feeling returns after this period. If
any external sutures have been necessary they will be removed
after 6-7 days. After removal of the splint the change in the
shape will be obvious but further resolution of swelling is
to be expected for 6-9 months. The results are permanent
expect for changes to be expected with ageing.
Do's and Don'ts following surgery:
Use cool packs on eyes for 48 hours to reduce bruising. Avoid
taking aspirin or Brufen and similar drugs. Take Paracetamol
instead for pain. Do not blow your nose and avoid smoky
environment and company of people with colds. If you wear
glasses it may be better to tape them to your forehead. During
early days drinking plenty of fluids (avoid alcohol ) and
sleeping on your back with extra pillows may be helpful.
Physical exertion should be avoided for first few weeks and
avoid injury to nose. Swimming and exercise can be resumed
after two weeks. Remember , if in doubt call the hospital for
advice.
