Operation is performed under
general anesthesia and takes between 1.5 to 2 hours. Most of
the operations are done from inside the nose leaving no
external scars but some procedures involve external incisions
leaving small and usually insignificant scars. After the
operation a nasal pack is inserted for 1-2 days and a splint
is applied for two weeks. In some cases one or the other of
these are unnecessary. |
Conventional Rhinoplasty :
All of the procedure is carried out from within the nose and
no external scars are needed. I still do 80% of the procedures
as conventional Rhinoplasties. Removal of hump, straightening
of the nose and narrowing of nose and tip is possible through
this approach. Detailed work on the nasal tip is difficult
though and requires an open Rhinoplasty.
Open Rhinoplasty :
When mainly tip Rhinoplasty is required an open approach is
best. A small external scar on the columella results which
fades acceptably. This approach is also good for putting
cartilage grafts to change the shape of the nasal tip and some
patients who need extensive septal work. The disadvantage in
addition to longer operating time and scar is that the nasal
tip may take longer to settle down.
